The Music Collective: Vol. 1

Posted April 27th by Anise in Iceland, Mexico, Music, Music Collective, Scotland, Sweden, Videos

It seems like every week we’re coming up with new regular features. Well here’s another one: The Music Collective. On a semi-regular basis we will compile a random assortment of music videos and mp3s from various countries. So let’s get started!

Iceland

Iceland was catapulted into the news recently after a major volcano exploded. Well in light of that, I decided to showcase some of the positive things happening in Iceland’s music scene:

  • Sudden Weather Change is releasing a single and split EP this month. The band has already caught the attention of major music publications. Of the band Pitchfork writes, “Sudden Weather Change are apparently in their early 20s, they somehow manage to capture what it felt like to be an arty emo kid in high school in 1998. Remember, ‘emo’ meant something very different ten years ago than it does today– Sudden Weather Change recall the prime of Sunny Day Real Estate or Cap’n Jazz.”
  • For those interested in electronic music, here’s a video by the duo Captain Fufanu:

Mexico

  • The music blog, Red Bull Panamerika, has extensive coverage of the Vive Latino music festival in Mexico City (the website is in Spanish so you may need to translate). The annual festival, “is one of the most important rock en español music festivals in [Latin] America, featuring a great variety of Mexican, Latin, and Spanish groups of many genres.” Keep track of all the music, shows, and pictures here (this a site is also in Spanish so translation applies here as well).

Scotland

  • Earlier this month, the Scottish band, We Were Promised Jetpacks, released a new video for their song, It’s Thunder and It’s Lightning. According to their label, FatCat Records, the video perfectly fits the dramatic nature of the dynamics in the song and its lyrics, providing a fittingly frenzied visual accompaniment to the song’s climax.” Watch and see if you agree:

Sweden

  • Brotherhood of Broken Hearts has a new song out called Aeroboy.  Swedesplease says that, “the band’s stated goal is to mix indie pop with electropop.” Listen to the track below. If you like this and want to hear more, check out their website for some of their older material.
